Class 2’s Story Sacks

Dear Parents/Carers,

To continue to promote a love of reading and to develop our library and reading resources, we are hoping to create and use some Story Sacks. A Story Sack is a creative yet simple resource which can bring a story to life in a fun and engaging way. The Story Sack usually includes a well known picture story book and a range of supporting resources such as; cuddly/plastic toys, miniature toys, finger puppets, hand puppets, non-fiction resources related to characters in the book, a homemade game to go with the book, some story stones, picture cards, a back-drop for puppet shows, audio CD or DVD’s and much more. There are many examples and suggestions online.

We are looking for any donations or help at all to support the development of these sacks. If you would like to work with your child at home to make a story sack or donate a cuddly toy, it would be much appreciated.

To give you an idea of some of the things that we are looking for, here is a list of some topics but if you have any ideas of your own, please do share with us.

  • Animals  (jungle, farm, pet, insects)
  • Birds (pretend nests, toy eggs)
  • Pirates (maps, chests, eye patches)
  • Food (tea sets, plastic food)
  • Dinosaurs (eggs)
  • Witches (wands, hats, cauldrons)
  • Oceans (fish, boats, sea creatures)
  • Farmyard (tractors, tools)
  • Children’s Geography Accessories (telescope, compass, maps, flags)
  • Toy Musical Instruments

The children will be deciding on most of the books but a few that I would really like to create Story Sacks for are:

  • The Gruffalo
  • Stick Man
  • Dear Zoo
  • Owl Babies
  • The Tiger Who Came To Tea

We already have a Story Sack for ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.

An example Story Sack:

All donations will be gratefully received but all may not be used immediately, they might be kept for future Story Sacks. Any unused items will be donated to School Circle for future fundraising events.

The children are going to be involved in creating them and I am sure that they will have lots of ideas to share with you.

This will be an ongoing project and I am hoping that the majority of resources that we will use will be reused, recycled or homemade rather than bought.

Please do not worry if you don’t have anything to contribute yet. Just keep this in mind next time you have a clear out.

Many thanks in advance for your help and generosity.

Mrs Jones
