Based on a Scandinavian idea, Forest School involves children working, with their teachers, in a woodland setting. The usual curriculum is followed but in an outdoor, practical context, using learning and teaching strategies which raise awareness, self-confidence and independence, and develop other key skills including: the ability to communicate, collaborate and solve problems as part of a team. In addition to the physical, social and health benefits for the children, the outdoor environment has proven to be a good motivator. This flows back into the classroom and impacts positively upon achievement. The school has its own Forest Area, located within the school grounds.

Forest school at Longnor offers a unique, holistic learning experience for the children. All children have regular opportunities to achieve and develop their confidence and self esteem through hands-on activities in an outdoor environment. Learning outdoors enables children to gain independence; the tasks they do encourage teamwork, social skills, communication and language skills. These may be Bush Craft skills or opportunities to enhance other areas of the curriculum. There are different objectives which are covered over the sessions where adults support, but also allow children to plan their own learning.
