Building a schema
Both history and geography are organised into units of work in order to build conceptual understanding. Building upon knowledge in a meaningful way connects information and deepens understanding.
History
Within history, we have used Chris Quigley’s guidance to organise knowledge into main concepts:
- Investigate and interpret the past
- Build an overview of world history
- Understand chronology
- Communicate historically
To strengthen the schema each concept has subdivisions or categories. At Longnor CE Primary School, we support the development of knowledge by building upon each division of knowledge through the school. Careful mapping ensures that each topic revisits strands and knowledge learnt previously.

Geography
Within geography, we have used Chris Quigley’s guidance to organise knowledge into main concepts:
- Investigate places
- Investigate patterns
- Communicate geographically
As with the history, geography has subdivisions or categories to strengthen the schema each concept . At Longnor CE Primary School, we support the development of knowledge by building upon each division of knowledge through the school. Careful mapping ensures that each topic revisits strands and knowledge learnt previously.
