PSHE

The life skills of independence, teamwork, responsibility, respect, confidence and communication underpin all the work we do at Longnor CE Primary School. These skills are embedded in thematic work and in the way children behave on a daily basis. We strive to develop confident, independent children who have the skills to lead a successful life.

PSHE is often taught through other subjects, such as healthy eating in science. However, specific PSHE lessons are planned for and use the Oak Academy resources based on the following key areas:

  • Respect for everyone within the community
  • An awareness of the law – boundaries, privacy and rights
  • How to keep safe
  • Informed about the challenges faced when growing up
  • Fundamental characteristics of positive relationships, including online relationships

In EYFS, PSHE is taught through all activities and daily situations.

Through years one to six, we have designed, using the National Oak Academy, a spiral curriculum which focuses on the four main strands: wellbeing, relationships, online safety and wellbeing. PSHE lessons are weekly and provide regular opportunity to enhance personal development. There are opportunities to revisit and develop with repeated themes through the year. The children in Year 5 and 6 get the opportunity to attend the Crucial Crew days in the summer term.

The developing bodies learning intentions are not taught before year four:

Year 4:

  • Know the changes that people go through during puberty.
  • Know what menstruation is and how to manage it.
  • Know how to stay clean during puberty.
  • Know that some parts of the body are private (breasts, pubic hair, anus, penis, testicle, vagina) and no-one should ask to be touch or be touched in these areas (NSPCC Pantosaurus).

Years 5 and 6:

  • I can describe the physical changes that happen during puberty.
  • I can describe the specific changes that happen to males and females during puberty.
  • I can describe the emotional changes that take place during puberty and explain where to get support.
