We have had significant feedback from parents of children in year seven regarding homework. It has been reported that ex-Longnor students are struggling to independently organise their home tasks. As a staff team, we have taken this into consideration and have thought about whether we are preparing our students sufficiently for secondary school. Therefore, we have adapted our homework policy so that it develops in structure, quantity and independence through school. Please see our full ‘new’ homework policy on the school website: click here.
This is an overview of homework from the summer term:
KS1
Regular reading is vital. For children in Key Stage 1 homework should largely consist of regular reading with parents and carers, looking at books together. Reading practice and listening to others read continues to be essential right through primary school.
Playing games to learning and recall times tables / number bonds support fluency and mathematics progression. All children have a TTRS and Numbots account and password with questions targeting key calculations which are age appropriate.
To communicate progression in phonics, a weekly parent support sheet is sent home on a Monday, summarising teaching strategies and mnemonics used in school. There is an optional phonics activity included within this.
KS2
In addition to the regular activities mentioned for KS1, older children should be given regular homework which gradually increases in demand. This is age appropriate and related to learning within school.
A regular routine is important, particularly for English and mathematics homework tasks. Homework will be set as follows:
- Lower KS2 (years three and four) – a short grammar or spelling activity will be sent home each week. This should take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
- Upper KS2 (year five) – a grammar activity (set on SPAG.com) and a maths activity will be set each week. This should take approximately 45 minutes to complete.
- Upper KS2 (year six) – a grammar activity (set on SPAG.com), a mathematics activity (set on maths.co.uk) and a reading activity (sent home in a workbook) will be set each week. This should take approximately 1 hour to complete.
