Newsletter – 19th April 2024

Good evening,

Listening to the different classes share their work today, it is clear that the children and staff are working really hard across school to create interesting learning opportunities.

We have continued to think about the value of friendship in assemblies this week. We related conversations and comments to building blocks from Lego. The positive ones build a tower high, but the negative ones knock the tower to the ground. Therefore, we have thought about how we must think about the words we use to support each other. We thought that we should treat each other the way we would like to be treated ourselves:

Finally, I would like to wish all our runners the best of luck as they complete the half marathon challenge in Shrewsbury. I will be there as a volunteer so I hope to see you run.

All the best.

Shropshire Sings choir event – please respond with a yes or no

Please let us know if you would or would not like your child to take part in this event by completing this short Google Form.

Our School Choir has been invited to take part in Shropshire Sings on Wednesday 12th June 2024. We would like to see how many children would be interested in attending before we book a bus. We would be leaving from school at 3.00pm and children would need collecting from the West Mid Showground after the event. Families are welcome to attend and watch the concert which starts at 6.30pm – tickets will cost £7 for adults and £4 for children if booked in advance through the school. Entry for the choir is free but we would charge for the bus to the event.

Many thanks.

Relationships and sex education

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Since 2020 all primary schools in England have been required to teach Relationship Education and Health Education. This is in addition to the statutory national science curriculum. Our policy is available on the school website.

As you may be aware, as part of personal, social and health education we use the Shropshire Respect Yourself Eat Better, Move More, RSE scheme of work. This is quality assured by the PSHE Association and has won national awards. Our secondary schools also use the scheme. This provides age-appropriate progression and consistency of approach.

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from the sex education element of the curriculum, but not the relationship, science or health education curriculum. The DfE have produced a leaflet for parents “understanding relationship and health education in your child’s school: primary”  www.gov.uk .

If you have any concerns about the programme for your child, we are available to discuss these and the implications of withdrawal with you.  We can also highlight resources and books so that you can discuss these important issues with your child.

Please find attached our school letter and policy. RSE letter to parents 2024

Success at the athletics

Congratulations to our athletics teams for their success on Tuesday afternoon. Our boys’ team won their competition with some fabulous field events and excellent javelin skills. Our girls’ team came second in their competition with a wonderful relay finale which left the finishing points to within one from the leaders. Well done to all our athletes.

There will be pens marked in batches of numbers from 0 – 200, 201 – 400 and so on.  Please explain to your child(ren) that when they finish and have collected their medal and drink, to look for the numbered signage and go to the pen that matches their bib number to meet you.

You will need to enter the finish area by showing your wristband to a marshal,  please can only one adult wearing the wristband enter the finish line collection point and any other family and friends wait outside of the finish area.  Please note we have a separate entry and exit into and out of the finish area.

Duck Race

With the Duck Race fast approaching, we are very grateful to those who have volunteered their time and help so far with the planning. However we still need more help with a few things such as a few more volunteers to spare an hour on the day to help man a stall, as well as donations of cakes and baked goods to sell on the day. If you are able to do so, please can you either let the school office or Rachel King/ Tina Aljan know so we can plan accordingly.

School Circle would also like to bring to your attention that due to the location and nature of the farming field used for the Duck Race, we cannot allow any dogs onsite on the day under any circumstances. Children must also be supervised at all times as the stream is rather deep in places.

Charity Race

Alice Higgins, my brother Rupert Marsden, and I are doing a 5km muddy assault course for Cancer Research on 4th May at Weston Park.
Around 1 in 2 people will get cancer in their lifetime. Please donate and help us to raise money for this charity, and encourage us to get really really SUPER MUDDY!!
Thank you!

Shrewsbury Town Women’s football match – Sunday 28th April

At Longnor school we have a long tradition of both boys and girls playing football.
Two of Longnor School’s alumni, Kim Bebbington (who left around 2004) and Sophie Eastwood (left in 2019) both now play for The Shrewsbury Town Women’s first team who actively look to encourage more participation in the sport.
Sophie and Kim are both playing at Shrewsbury Town Croud Meadow Stadium on Sunday 28th April – kick off at 2pm and would love to see some Longnor faces there.
Both girls will be taking autographs at the end  of the match, so tell them you go to Longnor School school so they can say an extra special HELLO!
Tickets are just £2 per person click here to purchase online or simply pay at the gate.
If you buy online, let us know your School Name and seat numbers and we would be happy to give your child a shout out at half time!

Communities asked to help partners understand their health, community and wellbeing needs

Communities across the south of the county are being asked to take part in a survey to share their thoughts and experiences on what would make their community a healthier and better place to live.

The survey aims to seek the views from people of all ages living in and around Bridgnorth, Church Stretton, Cleobury Mortimer and Craven Arms, around what makes somewhere a good place to live, what are the biggest concerns and what can be most improved.

The call-to-action forms part of the council’s ongoing Joint Strategic Needs assessments (JSNA) programme. All councils are required undertake a JSNA to assess the health and social care needs of the local population to help improve the physical and mental wellbeing of Shropshire’s residents and communities and is carried out in partnership with the voluntary and community sector and the local NHS.

To find out more and take part in the survey visit https://shropshire.gov.uk/ShropLocalHealthandWellbeingSurvey

The survey will close on 21st April 2024.
