Last week, the SOUL team and I had a meeting with Ian Bartlett from Safer Schools. We discussed pupil and adult surveys and shared our thoughts and feelings.
From surveying 106 of our children, 100% feel safe in school and said that they ‘can tell a teacher if anything goes wrong’. Some of the younger children needed a reminder about stranger danger – Mrs Jones has done this in class. If you are able to follow this up at home, that would reinforce the message please.
Thank you for your input from home this is incredibly valuable. Most responses were concerned about the road and parking on the pavement opposite school. Mr Bartlett advised that this is outside of the school grounds; therefore, we can share concerns, but are unable to place cones or action anything on the road. We will contact the PCSOs to see if they are able to support.
Some asked about 20mph speed limit. I have been informed that this has been discussed at highways and should see this actioned this financial year.
With regard lighting at the front of school in the winter, we will look at having a light on for pick up from night owls for a late pick up.
We will also look at the front of school to improve the pick up area to see whether we can change the surface as the grassed area gets muddy in winter months. For this, please get involved with the School Council Family Challenge to help with a design and ideas.
Safer Schools is a fantastic initiative. It is a holistic, practical and a realistic approach to school security and personal safety. It gives our school a clear focus on the subject and turns a negative subject into a positive one. It sets a minimum standard for school security.
West Mercia Police and TrustEd Schools Multi Academy Trust support our school with the Safer School initiative. We are an accredited Safer School and proud of our Safer School sign and certificate. The accreditation is reviewed annually.
